Writing the Tree of Life
At age fourteen and already on a spiritual path, Laura declared to a neighbor “Some day I’m going to write a sweet little book about how we’re all connected!”
Twenty-five years later, she made good on that promise after lying on her couch staring up at a plant on an overhead ledge. She realized that she could take a cutting from that plant and lovingly re-pot it and send it off to her friend Rose, in Iowa. She could take another cutting and send it to someone in New York - and so on, and so forth. But no matter how many cuttings she took and no matter how far away she sent them, they would still be “her” plant, Laura’s plant, “that plant” that sat upon her ledge. They would grow into fully developed autonomous organisms, capable of giving way to even more cuttings, but the fact remained, they would always be the “stuff” of that plant. It struck her like a bolt of lightening that she had finally found her long-awaited analogy for explaining man’s connection to God and all of Creation. With days of her epiphany, the first draft of The Tree of Life came into being.
